Still Life with Turnips and Linen Dishcloth

Sometimes an idea captures my imagination that just will not let go… and in those instances, I am determined to make it work, even if I have to start over several times. With this painting, I scraped down at least five times before I finally settled on the composition of these three turnips.

The goal was to capture the fall of light across the linen dishcloth and how the highlights on the turnips were almost pearlescent.

Naomi and I had purchased these turnips at the Old Town farmer’s market, and I wanted to present an image of rustic harmony and calm.
